Rolex Explorer II
The Rolex Explorer II is a watch designed for explorers and adventurers and, like the GMT-Master II of the GMT-Master, is the younger brother of the Rolex Explorer. It is a tough and reliable watch with many interesting facts that can withstand the harshest conditions. The Rolex Explorer II has a unique 24-hour hand and steel bezel that allows the wearer to read the time in any time zone. The watch also has a date function and is water resistant to 100 meters. The Explorer II is truly a watch made for those who like to push their limits.
The origins of the Rolex Explorer II
The Rolex Explorer II was first produced in 1971 with the reference 1655. A surprise to many as the Rolex Explorer was a big hit and it was not thought that there would be room for a new Explorer. Nothing could be further from the truth when the reference 1655 was launched in 1971 with a new design.
Reliability in harsh conditions
This new Rolex watch, the Rolex Explorer II, was intended for even more extreme conditions than the first Explorer. The Rolex watch was equipped with higher water resistance, an extra pointer, a longer power reserve, and a fixed bezel to the watch case. The Rolex Explorer II was built to dive into the deepest caves, unlike its predecessor the Rolex Explorer which was built for climbing the highest mountains.
The features of the Rolex Explorer II
The Rolex Explorer II has a 40 mm and 42 mm diameter Oyster watch case (since reference 216570 in 2011) and is made of stainless steel. The Rolex Explorer II is equipped with an automatic movement with a date function and an additional feature, a special hand that allows you to read the time in another time zone.
The special hands
This special hand rotates around allowing you to read the time on the fixed bezel. This extra hand is bright orange in several references including the latest versions making it stand out well. Besides the orange hour hand, this watch has the famous Rolex Mercedes hands, these are hands that are easy to read.
The dial and other features
Similarly, there are different dials for the Rolex Explorer II and you can choose between a white dial and a black dial. On early vintage models, you could not choose a white dial. Those have a standard black dial with tritium hour markers. The modern Rolex Explorer II also has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The scratch-resistant sapphire glass is a big improvement over the crystal glass that was commonly used in the past. The Rolex Explorer II always comes on a steel Oyster bracelet with a folding clasp.
